When we follow Jesus, He sends us out to fish!
But what does that mean? Surely we're not talking about evangelism — that "E-word" that makes most folks politely turn off and quit listening. And they don't turn off because they're bad Christians or don't care, it's just that usually evangelism is associated with a program that someone's trying to sell or a "here today, gone tomorrow" program at church. And alot of the time, the things they tell you to do seem ... well, weird.
When Jesus calls us to follow Him, he wants us to know that we are very special ... and it's not because we're WEIRD, but because we're WIRED. We are wired with a certain personality, talents, and gifts to be useful to God and a blessing to others. We're wired into a network of relationships that only we have the opportunity to touch with the grace of Jesus.
The Bible gives us a number of great examples of this principle of WIRED not WEIRD (for the key verses on these stories check in our Scriptures section:
- Matthew follows Jesus then invites his "sinful" friends to a party to meet him
- Andrew, first thing after getting to know Jesus, goes and finds his brother Peter
- The Samaritan woman at the well goes back and invites all of her village to come and meet Jesus
- The man liberated from a Legion of demons is goes back and tells his friends and family about Jesus, preparing hearts for Jesus' return to the area
The good news plan of Jesus is really very simple and amazing. What's more, we've seen it at work uniquely in our own lives.
Jesus came as God's Message
Someone came as our Messenger
At just the right Moment
Now Jesus asks that we follow Him and learn to be that unique messenger in someone else's life so that together, we can have the impact of Jesus times 1800!
