God's people are looking for shepherding leaders is one of the most important times in their history. Jesus is our model for the kind of leader we are looking for — He is the Good Shepherd (John 10:1-18). And the primary emphasis in Jesus' words describing the Good Shepherd focus on the Lord laying down His life for us, His sheep.
Why would Jesus lay down His life for us when we are often go astray, sometimes get lost, occasionally get distracted, and even will at times disobey?
- The sheep are His sheep, and they are in grave danger.
- His loyalty to the Father and the flock demand it.
- He is not a hireling or robber: he won't run away or abandon us.
- He's the Good Shepherd, and sacrificing for sheep — even if it means your life — is what shepherds do!
So as we look for those who will be undershepherds for the Good Shepherd, as we seek men to shepherd God's flock which He bought by the blood of His Son, we want to look for men who will sacrifice for the sheep, because that is what shepherds do!
