Things can be going just fine and suddenly, out of nowhere, one of life's furious storms -- an emotional and spiritual tsunami -- hits us and we are not sure we can survive. In our darkest moments, we wonder if Jesus is there -- or if He is there, we wonder why He doesn't do something to intervene.

Matthew reminds us of two experiences he had with Jesus on the Sea of Galilee (Matthew 14:22-33 and Matthew 8:23-27). This lake can turn into a nightmare, and do so without warning, because of the topography combined with the weather. In both cases, when the experienced fisherman and boatsmen of Galilee are terrified, then everyone on the boat is. This was true in both cases.

Not only is Jesus present, He also uses the divine name for God, "I Am," to describe himself and emphasize that He sees their distress, He has heard their cries, and He is going to help (compare Matthew 14:27 and Exodus 3:7-13). Not only does He care, but He steps in and brings us through our storms.

But key is our response to the situation and to the promise of Jesus' presence. Are we willing to stay connected to our brother snad isters in Christ (Matthew 8:23; 14:22)? Are we willing to look to Jesus, both in sharing with Him honestly how we feel and also in trusting Him to help (Matthew 8:25; 14:28-30)? Are we willing to feed faith rather than focus on fear (Matthew 8:26; 14:31)?
