Life comes at you fast. The hardships of life can feel like an incessant jackhammer pounding your world into small pieces. Before long, we begin to feel like nothing will change. We feel stuck in a rut. When we look at what is going on, we give into the sentiment, "Ain't nothin' new." In many ways, this frustration makes us feel like giving up.
We want to say, "If God's still got the whole world in His hands, then why won't He change things?" This sentiment is not a lack of faith, but a mark of frustration and disappointment.
That's when an old familiar story comes to mind: Jesus' call to Peter on the shores of the Sea of Gallilee (Luke 5:1-11). Peter is back in the same ol' boat, by the same ol' sea, and there appears to be nothing new for him. He had followed John the Baptizer and longed for things to change in the world and in his own life. He had met Jesus and was fascinated. Then suddenly Jesus asks Peter to cast his net into deep water after catching nothing during the night. Then after a miraculous catch of fish, Jesus tells Peter not to be afraid, but follow Him into a whole new way of catching fish!
Yes, life can seem unchangeable. But with Jesus, God can do new things in our world (2 Corinthians 5:17)and use us to do things we never imagined (Ephesians 3:20-21)!
